This egg is what used to feed a family. Chef New’s family back in Pakchong, Isan.

A solitary egg was shared between the whole family along with an abundance of vegetables and a soup

…..

The egg and any source of protein for that matter was a luxury few could afford so it became this kind of symbol of happiness - the fully belly kind of happy feeling so many of us take for granted

A solitary egg to share in Isan, Thailand

…..

These days Chef New is well known for her very ‘healthy’ appetite and fondness for eggs, of course! It’s a luxury her family couldn’t afford and these days when her mum (Mea) calls she laughs out loud as Chef New tells her about her latest food indulgences. As far as Mea is concerned eating what you want when you want is the ultimate luxury so she’s a happy and proud mum

.....

In fact, until now Mea doesn’t even understand what a restaurant award is and the sole source of her pride is knowing her daughter eats so well 😂

…..

Isn’t it fascinating how hard times can lead you to your destined path and certain childhood experiences never ever leave you? No wonder Chef New loves cooking so much!

.....

We’d love to hear your early food experiences? Tell us about them in the comments below

…..

Welcome to #SundayStories where we’ll be reminiscing and sharing all sorts of stories about Chef New and Cafe Isan - the parts of our journey you won’t be familiar with. Yet!

…..

Thank you as always for your continued love and support 💕 and thank you too, Mr Solitary Egg! 🥚
